All the Barbie dresses that Margot Robbie wore to promote Barbie the movie
Never has an actress gotten so into the skin and clothes of her character.
Margot Robbie, the talented actress who will play Barbie in the upcoming film directed by Greta Gerwig, has taken her commitment to the character beyond the screen. During the film's promotional tour, Robbie has sported a variety of looks inspired by the past decades of the world's most famous doll. Together with a team of professionals led by stylist Andrew Mukamal, makeup artist Pati Dubroff and hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, she is traveling the world (from California to Australia, and from Australia to South Korea) leaving at each stop a new look that is both a tribute to the iconic doll and a healthy (and sometimes nostalgic) nod to the big fashion brands. From some looks designed by Gianni Versace himself that Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss wore on the catwalk in the 90s to Jeremy Scott's playful designs for Moschino (a signature that the creative director left last March), this is how Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal to his favorite doll: the actress herself. The team has meticulously recreated Barbie's iconic outfits, turning her style into a true homage to the doll's iconic fashion.
Dresses in pink, white and yellow
Barbie's signature colors: If Barbie had a soccer team, her colors would surely be hot pink, white and yellow, because there is no color combination more recognizable than this. During a photo shoot in Beverly Hills marking the start of Barbie's press tour, Robbie wore a Valentino polka dot minidress in Barbie's favorite colors. The set channeled the essence of the 2015 Pink and Fabulous Barbie, highlighting the color combination that defines the doll's style.
The gingham print
A nod to Barbie heritage: Pink gingham print has been a part of Barbie's wardrobe since 1973, when the Quick Curl doll went on sale. However, this print may have more meaning than just a nod to Barbie's history. Following the release of the film's trailer, fans noticed references to The Wizard of Oz, including Barbie's pink gingham belted dress. Is it a coincidence or an homage to Dorothy's famous blue dress? The connection between both fashion icons is fascinating.
The style of the "teenage model" Barbie
Robbie and Mukamal have done an impressive job recreating the look of the 1959 "teen model" Barbie. Hervé Léger's striped bandage dress mimics the silhouette of the original Barbie's strapless swimsuit, and each accessory has been meticulously selected to complete the look. From the white sunglasses with blue lenses to the patent leather peep-toe sandals and gold hoop earrings, Robbie exudes glamor in this ensemble.
The Moschino version of Barbie: Moschino couldn't be left behind and presented its own version of the 1964 Barbie. The design is perfect, from the hot pink shade to the rhinestone embroidery and the heart-shaped quilted bag. Although some liberties were taken in the silhouette to adapt it to current fashion, the essence of the Barbie of the 60s was maintained. A hat with an oversized bow completes the look, adding a touch of sophistication.
