“I look at a variety of outside sources of inspiration... there's a lot of great material, and my job is to distill that information and analyze it into the DNA of the Barbie doll,” says designer Linda Kyaw-Merschon. We're deeply impressed with how Linda and her team stay true to Barbie while exploring new style spaces.

Since its debut in 2014, the Instagram account @BarbieStyle has amassed more than 2.2 million followers, allowing fans a glimpse into the daily life of their favorite fashion icon. Her social media adventures also inspired a unique crowd-voted campaign to bring some of her most notable looks to doll collections through the @BarbieStyle Fashion Doll series.

With those dolls, you can design your own photo-worthy moments. But that was just the beginning of this sensationally chic series. In our latest installment, we take you "behind the scenes" to prepare Barbie for a new editorial shoot. @BarbieStyle Fashion Studio & Doll Set includes our fifth doll in the series, using the Made to Move articulated doll body and arriving with two complete outfits and many accessories. Even more notable, the set comes with a chair and a dressing table with a light-up mirror*, plus drawers and shelves to display all those premium and fashionable accessories. We spoke to product design manager Linda Kyaw-Merschon about her inspirations for Barbie doll's outfits and now we can share all the details. Dress Barbie doll for any occasion in a fitted white top, a cropped jacket and a pair of jeans. Then, she takes it from day to night in a strapless dress with a beautiful floral print and a mermaid silhouette. Finish any look with the included jewelry and choose from three pairs of shoes, one clutch, four clutches, and two pairs of sunglasses.

In addition to the doll, fashion and accessories, Linda was also able to choose and design the furniture that came in the set. "Yes! It's part of the joy of being a designer," she says. But it was about more than just choosing pieces for the set: it was about creating a whole environment behind the scenes. "I start with a vision, a mood or even a fantasy of what this space could be like," she explains. "In this particular vision, Barbie is backstage at a fashion photo shoot, getting ready. I see lights flashing, a foggy room filled with excitement. I hear racks and racks of clothing. clothes being escorted towards her, and she runs her hands gently through the fabrics. I wanted to make sure that every moment of that was captured on set with the vanity with real working lights, the clothes that take you from day to night , accessories, multiple pairs of shoes, etc.

Now, you can relive that vision by taking the Barbie doll from that backstage scene and putting her in front of your camera. To make it look as much like a real @BarbieStyle photo shoot, the set also includes four "pull cards", i.e. photo backgrounds. “We wanted these backgrounds to feel very true to the world of @BarbieStyle,” says Linda. “The atmosphere and mood had to be perfect and authentic to the channel. We wanted fans to feel like they are part of this world, that they can open this beautiful package and dress, style and pose her doll with the perfect backdrop. Essentially, we wanted to bring fans and collectors along on this very special journey with us.”

Vicky Gevorkyan, senior lead packaging designer, shared even more about those backgrounds and how they were chosen. “The removable cards slide into the clear compartment of the package for safekeeping,” she says. “Some of [the background scenes] were available to use and were built directly from our photo studio from the backgrounds on the @BarbieStyle page, and others were purchased to use in this set. But they are all very street moments to complement the doll and her fashion.”

In total, the set includes two complete looks, with three pairs of shoes and 15 fashion pieces; premium accessories such as makeup, perfume bottles, jewelry stand and necklace display; and furniture including a vanity set with a chair and a light-operated mirror, shelves and space to display those accessories.
