New doll from the musical series: David Bowie Barbie #2
Three years ago, Barbie Signature released its first tribute to the pioneer of sound and vision, David Bowie, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Space Oddity. That Barbie doll recreated her Ziggy Stardust alter ego, complete with space suit and makeup effects.
Now, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Bowie's Hunky Dory album, we are pleased to announce the arrival of our second David Bowie doll. This time, Barbie is dressed in an authentic replica of Bowie's custom-made pale blue suit worn in the movie "Life on Mars?" music video.
Barbie David Bowie 2 doll debuts today. Retailing for $50, this Bowie Barbie is a Gold Label doll with a limit of two (2) per person. That means you can get one to unbox and one to keep in pristine NRFB condition.
Design manager Linda Kyaw-Merschon led the team that created the first Bowie doll and returned for the glam-rock sequel. "I discovered Bowie in my late teens," says Linda. "He was like nothing he had ever experienced before. To me, he is the ultimate artistic icon of the music industry. He was so ahead of his time and challenged so many barriers." "
Recreating a real-world fashion at Barbie scale can be a challenge, and perhaps even more so when the outfit is so well-known. "Luckily, I have a great team that knows all the tricks to do it right!" Linda says. "The secret is capturing the essence, as making an exact 1:1 scale version is almost impossible. There's definitely a lot of trial and error involved, but being tenacious is a trait that has served us well."
In addition to the light blue suit, Barbie as Bowie sports a pinstriped, foil-print shirt, a statement tie, and platform shoes. The look is completed with striking blue eyeshadow and a hairstyle inspired by Bowie's glamorous '70s era. "We also wanted to make sure she looked like Barbie, but like Bowie. Not Bowie exactly like himself," Linda explains, referring to the choices of Neysa's facial sculpt and Gigi doll's body. "We tried to emulate her essence as much as we could. She was quite thin and pale, so we made sure to capture that as best as possible. Balance is key. It's tricky, but I think you'll understand what I mean when you see the doll in life real".
And when you get the doll in real life, you'll see how much fun Senior Packaging Designer Laydiana Chiv had with the doll's box. "The BOWIE logo reflects the silver found on her tie, and the soft blue packaging on the packaging is taken from her iconic blue suit and eyeshadow makeup," she says. "We also wanted to insert an Easter egg for Bowie fans using the distorted plaid pattern of the sweater Bowie wears on the Hunky Dory album cover. Plus, make the doll's hair stand out!"
