Synopsis

Barbie plays Merliah, a surfing champion from Malibu. Merliah is a normal teenager until one day she learns a big family secret: she is a mermaid! Merliah and her inseparable dolphin Zuma plan an aquatic adventure to rescue her mother, the queen of Oceana.

With the help of her new mermaid friends, Merliah saves the marine world.

In the end she discovers that what makes you different can become your greatest strength.

Barbie in A Mermaid Tale follows a sixteen-year-old girl named Merliah Summers (Liah to her friends). She is a prestigious surfer inMalibu  ;and she is nicknamed "the queen of the waves." On the day of a surfing competition, Merliah is surfing rogue waves when her hair suddenly turns pink upon contact with the seawater. Nervous to show everyone her hair, she goes underwater and encounters a dolphin named Zuma. Merliah discovers that she can breathe underwater. Zuma takes Merliah to her friends and then disappears. Merliah tells her friends, Nikki and Teresa what happened. and they tell them that it was just a blow and Merliah decides to go home. After telling her grandfather, Brake, what happened, Merliah discovers that she is half-mermaid. Thinking that her parents died when she was a baby, Grandpa tells Merliah the truth. Brake tells him that her father was a human named Rick and that her mother was a mermaid named Calissa who ruled over the city. an underwater kingdom called Oceana. Brake tells her that when her father died, Calissa was worried about Oceana and thought that her evil sister, Eris, would try to rule. At the same time, Calissa gave birth to Merliah. But Merliah didn't have a mermaid fin and since Calissa didn't want Merliah to come to any harm, she gave Merliah to her husband's father, Brake (the Merliah's grandfather). Calissa asked him If she could raise Merliah so that she would be safer in land outside of Eris's domain. It worked. Then Eris ruled and Brake told him that Calissa had died or was in Eris' custody. Characters

Merliah "Liah" Summers is a 16-year-old girl, originally from Malibu. Nicknamed "The Queen of the Waves", she is a surfing star, as she has loved the sea for as long as she can remember. After an incident at a competition, she discovers that she is half-mermaid, since her father, Rick, was a human being and her mother was a mermaid. Rick passed away prematurely before she was born and when Calissa, her mother and queen of the ocean gave birth to her, she saw that the girl had been born with legs, so she gave her & ó; to her grandfather to raise her, thinking that she would be safer on land than in the ocean.

Zuma is a bright pink dolphin who shows Merliah the entire kingdom of Oceana and helps him save Calissa.

Nikki is one of Merliah's best friends. She is sassy, outspoken and a little sarcastic, but she is super loyal, helpful and a great friend. She has dark skin, black hair and brown eyes.

Teresa is another best friend of Merliah. She is dreamy, imaginative, fun and a little distracted. Due to her personality, she was the first to believe Merliah's story that she was half-mermaid. Hadley has reddish-brown hair, green eyes, and tan skin.

Aqua and Marina are super elegant mermaids and best friends. They own a boutique under the sea, where Merliah receives a mermaid transformation. They have Whiskers, a sea lion pup. They help Merliah fight Eris. Aqua has blonde hair with blue stripes, while Marina has brown hair. with purple stripes.

Calissa is Merliah's mother. She was the just and beloved ruler of Oceana, until her evil sister Eris captured her. and usurped the throne. In the end, she manages to reign again.

Eris is Calissa's sister and holds a deep grudge against her, since she is not capable of producing Merilia. After overthrowing Calissa, she rules Oceana with an iron fist until her niece Merliah appears to defeat her. In the end she is banished to the deepest abyss

Brake is Merliah's grandfather. He adores her granddaughter and supports her in everything. Calissa asks him to raise Merliah, since being born with legs, the sea was too dangerous for her.

Whiskers is a sea lion pup. Its owners are Kayla and Xylie.

The Destinos are the fashionista fortune tellers of the sea. Merliah goes with them to find out how to overthrow Eris and save her mother.

Sirenka is a celebrity mermaid in Oceana. She is always seen in the company of her purse fish and being photographed by paparazzi.
