Aztec horoscope
The Aztecs dominated much of the current territories of Mexico and Guatemala for two centuries. They excelled in arithmetic and mathematics, spoke a language composed of 36,000 words, had extensive knowledge of astronomy and were experts in horoscopes and predictions.
For many specialists, the Aztec horoscope is based or inspired by the Mayan horoscope. The Aztecs were very good astrologers. They have twelve signs:
- Cayman / Cipactli
- House / Calli
- Flower / Xochiti
- Snake / Cóatl
- Jaguar / Océlotl
- Cane / Acatl
- Rabbit / Tochtli
- Eagle / Cuayhtli
- Monkey / Ozomatli
- Flint (Stone) / Técpatl
- Dog / Itzcuintli
- Deer / Mázatl
We know that the Aztecs used a system to order days based on two calendars. One of these two calendars was called tōnalpōhualli and was based on a 260-day cycle. The other calendar was known as xiuhpōhualli and followed a 365-day cycle. These two calendars followed different cycles but coincided approximately every 52 years.
The xiuhpōhualli calendar followed the solar cycle and it is believed that it was used for agricultural organization tasks. The tōnalpōhualli calendar, on the other hand, was used for religious purposes, worship of the gods and to make predictions.
The tōnalpōhualli was made up of 20 periods of 13 days, resulting in a total of 260 days. This calendar is very similar to the calendar also used by the Mayan civilization and known as Tzolkin.
The nature of this calendar indicates that it was not a calendar based on the solar cycle or the lunar cycle. There are different theories that try to explain whether this calendar followed some type of natural phenomenon. A possible explanation says that it is based on the numbers 13 and 20 because these numbers had special importance in the Aztec civilization.
According to this calendar, each day was identified with a number between 1 and 13 along with the name of the day. The names of the days were important concepts in Aztec culture. In addition, each name was related to an Aztec deity and a cardinal point.
Unlike the Western horoscope, in the Aztec horoscope each sign does not correspond to a specific period of continuum (for example, Aries covers from March 21 to April 20 in our horoscope), but rather to several days skipped throughout of the calendar. In this way, to give an example, whoever is born on January 4 corresponds to the Caimán sign; while those who are born a day later, on January 5, correspond to the House sign, whose personality has nothing to do with that of Cayman.
The horoscope is represented by twelve signs composed of animals, plants and other sacred objects of this ancient civilization.
