Tetsuko Kuroyanagi was born in Tokyo, Japan. Her father was a violinist and a concert master of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from Tomoe Gakuen, Koran Girls School and Tokyo College of Music (Vocal Music Department), she joined the NHK Broadcasting Theater. She is recognized as the first exclusive TV actress at NHK. Tetsuko trained in theatre at Tokyo’s Bungakuza theatre company and at the Mary Tarcai Studio in New York.

Tetsuko has appeared on numerous American TV shows, including Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. She has also been featured in magazine and newspaper articles in TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Herald Tribune, and People.

Tetsuko's Room, Her talk show on Japanese televison, Tetsuko's Room, has been on the air for 44/nearly 45 years. Her novel, Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window, has sold over 8 million copies in Japan, making it Japan’s most published novel. The novel has been translated into English, German, Russian, Chinese, and Arabic and is sold in more than 35 countries.

With royalties from her book sales, Tetsuko established the Totto Foundation to provide professional training to actors with hearing impairments.

Tetsuko visits countries in Asia and Africa in her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF while supporting the charity and promoting its activities in the media. She has also made great contributions to Japanese culture as a member of the Japan P.E.N. Club, head of the Chihiro Art Museum (Tokyo and Azumino, vice chairperson of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and honorary chairman of the Japan Panda Protection Association.
