Barbie collaboration with Mark Ryden and pop surrealism
IT IS BEING GETTING SURREAL
Mattel Creations' next collaboration with Mark Ryden introduces Barbie to pop surrealism.
KEEP IT SURREALISTIC
The upcoming collaboration with artist Mark Ryden puts Barbie on the pedestal of pop surrealism.
LEAVING A MARK ON POP ART
Art world superstar Mark Ryden is recognized as the godfather of pop surrealism. Ryden's creative techniques helped define the movement: the exacting craftsmanship and layers of Old Master-style painting reimagined with a fun, modern mix of candy-colored flea market finds and woodland creatures , toys, children and cultural artifacts. Ryden's paintings guide viewers through enigmatic scenes to become wonderfully whimsical puzzles of metaphysical allusions, all designed to act as a bridge between our world and a magical land. dreamy. There is a resonant depth to its attention to detail, including the lavishly carved ornamental frames and the rich symbolism of Cyrillic and Chinese script, numerology and spiritual iconography.
Mark Ryden was born in Medford, Oregon in 1963. After receiving his BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Ryden quickly came to the attention of the art world of the 1990s when he introduced a new genre of painting. "Pop surrealism" developed the scope and spirit of 20th-century surrealism by embellishing its vocabulary with contemporary cultural references. Ryden's paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including a career-spanning retrospective in 2015 at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, as well as an earlier retrospective at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and the California Museum of Art in Pasadena.
AN ICON REINVENTED
With childlike innocence and the divine powers of womanhood serving as major themes in Ryden's repertoire, it is no surprise that she works with Barbie as a theme. Back in 1994, Santa Barbie was released, quickly becoming one of his most recognized paintings. The piece plays with Ryden's evocative balance of paradox and curiosity.
Mattel is beyond excited to partner with Ryden for their next pop-up collection and gallery exhibition featuring our beloved pioneer. Working in conjunction with Ryden and his long-time partners at Kasmin Gallery, the co-organized show and collection will feature new and past works. As part of the experience, a set of limited-edition Barbie dolls and accessories that embody pop surrealism will be on display.
The Kasmin Gallery x Mattel Creations pop-up will be located at 8382 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90069. It begins on November 11, 2022 and ends on December 11, 2022, and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 18:00
